Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations. GIZ promotes complex reforms and change processes, often working under difficult conditions. Its corporate objective is to improve people’s living conditions on a sustainable basis. GIZ International Services (InS) is the company’s business department offering services to international clients such as the European Commission, World Bank, etc.

We are currently looking for an IT Professional (m/f).

The position is available for starting in May 2025. The workplace will be Belgium (Brussels), GIZ offers an employment contract (full time) uner the Belgian labour law (CP200). Business travel to Germany and/or partner countries might be required.

Background:

IT and digital tools are used extensively by the GIZ employees to achieve its business objectives. Consequently, professionals working in the IT unit ensure that all relevant IT systems are working as they should and in compliance with applicable rules and regulations.

A. Responsibilities:

The IT professional will work to provide support to colleagues in the GIZ CO and projects. Responsibilities are:

  • Maintain all working hardware and software (IT infrastructure) in optimum condition to minimise interruption to GIZ work
  • Ensure that the IT systems in use comply to guidelines relating to IT and data security according to ISO/IEC 27001 certification
  • identifying relevant problems and issues and assisting in formulating implementation-oriented solutions
  • further developing instruments and assisting in introducing innovation and change
  • managing knowledge by disseminating and documenting know-how, experience and information
  • Promote the digital transformation process and to provide competent support including information management, IT security and data protection.
  • Support in the operation and development of different IT systems (i.e. LMS, GMT, Event Management Systems).

B. The IT professional performs the following tasks:

1. IT Infrastructure and tools (hardware, software and networks)

  • Assists in purchasing, installing and maintaining hardware (notebooks, printers, digital cameras, scanners, servers and all PCs) in accordance with current GIZ standards
  • Monitors the state of hardware and software in use and in consultation with management, helps purchase and improve hardware and networks, assists with testing new hardware systems, and identifies options for upgrading existing systems and peripherals 
  • Helps maintain all GIZ standard and custom software used in the field structure (e.g.  Office 365, WINPACCS, SAP, Payroll)
  • Helps update and purchase new software
  • Monitors the internet connections in use to ensure maximum uptime
  • Helps maintain local area network (LAN)

 2. IT Security

  • Helps monitor vulnerabilities in the communications networks used to ensure data leaks are prevented
  • Helps design and monitor existing set up to ensure compliance to GIZ IT and data security regulations
  • Helps regularly update antivirus software and relevant operating system updates/patches to ensure a secure working environment
  • Helps maintain user permissions and access to a local shared filing system
  • Helps in data backup to ensure possibility of total recovery

 3. Operational support

  • In consultation with management and within the limits of his/her authority to act, consults with suppliers to ensure that the network, telephone system and computer hardware function properly
  • Incorporates market developments on relevant IT issues on his/her own initiative

 4. Digital transformation, IT security and Data protection

  • Be part of the digitalization network (as IT partner) and provide competent support.
  • Participate in the further expansion of the digital network by introducing the use of existing and new digital GIZ systems, such as IDA / Office365, DMS, etc., as well as providing orientation for future digital solutions from the headquarters.
  • Follow the IT guidelines from DIGITS and, in cooperation with the IT professionals (i.e. IT support), check them for completeness and topicality and provide feedback to DIGITS.
  • Manage information security risks and report unrecognized risks in collaboration with IT professionals
  • Maintain the GIZ data protection regulations.

5. IT Systems Management

  • Provides first-level user support to the IT systems, including Learning Management Systems (LMS), Grant Management Tool (GMT), Event Management Systems (EMS) and Others.
  • Assists in the development, testing, and maintenance of the IT systems as part of IT projects.
  • Collaborates with the IT provider team to ensure smooth operation of the IT systems.
  • Assists in documenting relevant IT system configuration/usage (i.e. End user manuals, ToT manuals) and ensuring compliance with IT standards.
  • Ensuring that IT systems adhere to GIZ security standard.

6. General tasks

  • Carries out and ensures general administration of the entire IT system 
  • Backs up data and safeguards the system against hackers 
  • Resolves all computer and internet problems, prepares all the necessary information and provides phone support 
  • Ensures an IT emergency service 
  • Assists in advising on IT projects 
  • Maintains a list of all hardware and software systems, and updates this to reflect changes 
  • Documents the installation and settings on the server and on all computers.
  • Ensures that IT on site is up to date according GIZ IT guidelines.
  • Well connected to colleagues from GIZ division DIGITS and other IT professionals.

 7. Other duties/additional tasks

  •  Performs other duties and tasks at the request of management 

 C. Required qualifications, competences and experience Qualifications

  • BSc/MSc in IT or relevant areas.
  • Certification in Microsoft Windows Server 2012/2016, Windows 10 / 11 and MS Office 2016/365 or equivalent experience.
  • Outstanding knowledge of IT hardware and software used, computer networking concept (LAN, VPN, routers, switches etc), database systems, operating software, network security.
  • Knowledge of GIZ systems and specific GIZ software (SAP, WINPACCS, etc.) is an asset.
  • Sound expertise of web Development with a focus on server-side technologies like PHP and the relevant CMS (i.e. Drupal/WordPress etc.).
  • Experience in troubleshooting technical (IT) problems and handling user requests.
  • Excellent communication skills including training / education and change management.
  1. Professional experience
  • 3 years’ experience in an IT position or similar experience in digitalization, technology, data protection (GDPR rules) and digital risks etc.
  1. Other knowledge, additional competences
  • Good knowledge and command of the English is a must, knowledge of German will be added advantage.
  • Outstanding working knowledge of ITC technologies (related software, phone, fax, email, the internet) and computer applications (e.g. Office 365).
  • Advanced skills in utilizing open-source solutions (i.e Moodle, Drupal or any others etc) will be added advantage.
  • Experience as web developer will be added advantage.  
  • Willingness to upskill as required by the tasks to be performed – corresponding measures are agreed with management.
